IMPLICATE ORDER :
A DIALOGUE OF MATERIALS

By allowing the materials – paper, plaster, rope, wood and iron – a certain autonomy or will, new relationships, new similarities and new differences are revealed.

Gathering a selection of these materials in my studio, I work intuitively, allowing them to reveal their place in the overall work and their relationship to each other, The materials are minimal, but the assemblages are powerful. These dialogues mirror my study of the interrelated nature of science and spirituality, and the concept of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. The title of the installation is taken from a quote by David Bohm, the physicist who described the dynamics of the sub atomic world of quantum physics and came to describe the nature of the universe in spiritual terms. My desire to explore natural materials in an installation is crystallized by seeing the work of Kazuo Kadonaga. There is a parallel between minimalism and the Buddhist philosophy that teaches, "by understanding one thing you can understand the ten thousand things."
